“Liminal space can best be described as going through a change or going from place to place—from one thing to the next”
DERIVED from Gothic literature, liminal spaces are described as operating in a ‘between’ space, passing from one place to the next, often in a state of confusion about which direction you’re supposed to go. This series of images explores this idea of liminality in relation to navigating living alone in the city.
By using harsh, focused, flash lighting to illuminate the subject, whilst keeping the background fairly dark, we created a separation between our subject and their environment. Alluding to her separation from the city around her and an attempt to visually portray unnerving feelings and states of confusion in your early twenties.
Numerous looks and ambiguous locations around the city were used to confuse any sense of familiarity within the images, creating an almost dissociative dream state.
