THE RITZ London, synonymous with style and glamour is home to The Rivoli Bar, and this January in the spirit of all things wellness, it’s launching a new cocktail menu entitled, ‘Biodynamic Forces Through The Alchemy of Planets and Plants.’

Biodynamic Forces Through The Alchemy of Planets and Plants

Expect 14 new cocktails that draw inspiration from biodynamic farming that offers guests not only innovative combinations, but also an immersive, educational experience. First established by Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s, biodynamic farming focuses on the connection between soil, plants, animals, and the cosmos.

Maria Thun then created the Biodynamic Calendar which mapped out the influence of lunar and planetary cycles on specific parts of the plant—root, leaf, flower, or fruit—and their ideal times for harvesting.

Biodynamic Forces Through The Alchemy of Planets and Plants

In true form, each cocktail crafted by Michele Saladino, Head Mixologist and his team, is named after a planet on this Biodynamic Calendar, offering a playful menu that’s interactive and adds a touch of fun to the luxury cocktail experience.

The interactive element adds a level of engagement to the cocktail, allowing guests to select their cocktail by exploring constellation diagrams and astrology signs on each page. It also features a flavour dial that links each cocktail to the Biodynamic Calendar, offering a unique way to discover various ingredients.

And of course, where possible the team use biodynamic, organic and seasonal ingredients, working closely with The Biodynamic Association Demeter to build a relationship with farmers, producers and suppliers across to source produce that meet the standards.

Biodynamic Forces Through The Alchemy of Planets and Plants

Personified by a fictional character, The Astro Botanist, this new menu includes original takes on ten classic cocktails, from the Jupiter, an elegant floral spritz, that’s poured at the table from a small fountain and topped up with biodynamic champagne, to The Moon, a twist on the Dirty Martini, as well as Mars, a new take on a Negroni. There are also four alcohol free cocktails, named Elixir Naturalis which include the Mercurius, Triton, Ariel and Phobos.

Biodynamic Forces Through The Alchemy of Planets and Plants

The ritzy experience is elevated further thanks to an exclusive collection of bespoke glassware that reflect each concept, and for this, the 5-star hotel worked with 3D Vault to design the pieces, crafted from ceramic, recycled glass, and PLA (a 100% natural material derived from renewable resources). Through 3D printing, 3D Vault creates precise models with zero material waste and high-quality durable products.

DECADES of history alone makes Great Scotland Yard a one-of-a-kind hotel and being tucked away on a quiet road just down from Trafalgar Square, it’s an extraordinary property within the heart of the city.

Upon arrival, dressed in traditional Police inspired uniform are the concierge team, who greet me with a warm welcome. Once home to the Metropolitan Police, the property’s stories and memoirs are celebrated throughout the hotel, with antiques and bespoke artwork taking over the walls.

King room

The unique character of Great Scotland Yard is transferred from the lobby to the 158 rooms and suites. Thoughtful restoration balances the traditional qualities of a classic British townhouse with modern influences.

My cosy room is surrounded by elegant furnishings, featuring a comfortable King bed and luxury bathroom. For me, the bathroom is the jewel of the room as I have never seen a more inviting walk-in shower.

Whisky tasting at Síbín

Away from their lavish rooms, the ground floor of the hotel is host to a range of appealing dining options. From old Nordic cooking techniques by Michelin starred chef Niklas Ekstedt at Ekstedt at The Yard, to afternoon tea at The Parlour.

The most memorable being the illicit speakeasy bar, Síbín. Hidden in plain sight behind a bookcase wall, this whisky bar set in a sophisticated room is a relaxing space for evening drinks and intimate jazz nights.

Cocktail at Síbín

Whisky masterclasses are what they’re known for here and Ivan, our whisky sommelier for the evening, guides us on an inquisitive odyssey. “The Explorer,” is a masterclass which takes guests through the origin and stories of whisky, unveiling global flavours from a carefully curated selection from Japan, Mexico and Scotland to name a few.

After finishing our enlightening expedition, we enjoy the rest of the night filled with music and cocktails in the chill out lounge, before heading back to our room for a peaceful slumber.

THE NEGRONI is a cocktail fit for Halloween – move over Count Dracula – it’s thought that the Negroni first came about in Florence thanks to the Italian Count Camillo Negroni in the early 20th century, as noted in the book, “Sulle Tracce del Conte: La Vera Storia del Cocktail Negroni” (which translates to “In the Footsteps of the Count: The True Story of the Negroni Cocktail”) written by Lucca Picchi, the head bartender at Caffe Rivoire in Florence.

The Goring Bar

It was while drinking at Bar Casoni in Florence, the Count asked for a stronger take on his favourite cocktail, the Americano, banishing the soda water, and instead replacing it with gin, and finished with orange peel (as opposed to the usual lemon rind)–and the Negroni was born.

Fast-forward, and The Goring hotel in London’s Belgravia, is serving up it’s contemporary take on this hallowed cocktail – think halloween-meets-brat summer (cue the hue)-meets matcha. Here’s how to recreate it at home.

Ingredients:

  • 30ml Plymouth Gin
  • 20ml Sakura vermouth
  • 10ml Yellow chartreuse
  • 5ml Matcha syrup

Method:

  • Add all the liquid into and stir.
  • Strain the liquid into a rocks glass filled with ice

TO celebrate the highly anticipated release of Gladiator 2, Ridley Scott’s family-owned vineyard, Mas des Infermières has launched a special limited edition wine collection called The Imperatores Collection. Located in the Luberon region of southern France, the estate will offer the collection in the UK starting 4 November 2024, exclusively at Selfridges.

The collection features limited edition runs of the award-winning ‘Source’ red and ‘Source’ white wines, adorned with exclusive labels illustrated by Ridley Scott. The red wine is dedicated to Caracalla, while the white honours Geta.

For collectors and film fans, an even rarer offering is available: the Imperatores magnum of Ombre de Lune red. Only 100 numbered bottles will be produced, each coming in a luxury box with a commemorative card signed by Scott and a prop coin from the movie. The magnum’s label also features Scott’s illustrations of the two emperors.

RECOGNISED for their award-winning beverages and mixologists, The Zetter’s hotels are prime spots for unwinding after a long day with an ice-cold alcoholic drink.

Now, the hotel group has decided to embark upon a new adventure – a journey into the world of distillery and winemaking.

The Zetter has just launched its first-ever wine collection, The Zetter Wines. Comprising of two unique vintages – The Seymour Blanc and The Wilhelmina Rouge – the ensemble promises to take guests’ experiences to new heights.

The Zetter Hotel

The Seymour Blanc

To start, The Seymour Blanc blends Chardonnay, Grenache Blanc and Muscat for a crisp, refreshing taste, accompanied by subtle notes of lime, lemon and green apple. Arriving from the southwest coast of France, the wine’s delicate minerality and freshness make for a light yet refined oenological delight.

The Wilhelmina Rouge

Secondly, The Wilhelmina Rouge is The Zetter’s red wine. Intertwining blackberry, plum, spices and black pepper, the wine’s rich flavours make it perfect for casual sipping or alongside a hearty meal. Arriving from Languedoc, The Wilhemina Rouge intertwines Carignan, Syrah and Grenache into one harmonious concoction.

To ensure the wines meet The Zetter’s high standards, the group teamed up with expert winemaker Chris Muret to create the two new offerings. Having produced some of the best Picpoul de Pinet, Muret’s guidance has led The Zetter to produce a range of tasteful, sophisticated wines.

Arriving in bottles adorned with a hand-drawn design by artist Chris Druitt, the wines embody The Zetter’s spirit through aesthetics and taste. Taking inspiration from ‘The Last Supper’, the label shines a light on The Zetter’s team, who appear working behind the acclaimed Zetter bar.

“When designing the label for The Zetter Wines, I didn’t want to just show off the vintage but rather incorporate the ethos of The Zetter itself. Flavours are what give the wine its quality but the label is how that personality is shown. I wanted the team behind The Zetter to be front and centre, as without their hard work and dedication, this product wouldn’t exist,” explains Druitt.

by Sophie Richardson

The wines are now available at The Zetter Clerkenwell and The Zetter Marylebone. Rates at The Zetter Clerkenwell start from £350 per night. For more information, please visit here.

NOTTING HILL needs no introduction but a fetchingly small hotel on residential Pemberton Gardens tends to escape attention unless you seek it out. It makes a particular claim on the attention of oenophiles with its summer promotion of four red, white and rosé wines from the cellar of Mas des Infermières in southern France.

The estate was bought by filmmaker Ridley Scott in 1992 as a home away from Hollywood. A selection from his cellar, from an area overlapping Rhône and Provence, can be enjoyed on the terrace of The Laslett Hotel, free of traffic noise and the tread of pedestrians in this overly popular part of west London.

Ridley Scott’s Mas des Infermières at The Laslett

Mas des Infermières at the Laslett Hotel

The setting, amidst potted olive and lemon trees, is the antithesis of Ridley Scott’s undoubtedly best film, Blade Runner,so come here for an unintimidating  wine moment with a glass (or carafe or bottle) of a  ‘Source’ Rosé while musing on a food menu that suits brunch or dinner. Wine parings of an obvious kind are suggested but they can be safely ignored if sharing dishes.

‘Perle Du Mas’ sparkling rosé

The ‘summer salad’ is suitably named, given its grapes and sundried tomatoes, but a lemon tahini dressing adds an autumnal inflection and makes this salad an ideal starter. The ‘Source’ white and red selections are also available by a glass, carafe or bottle and only the ‘Perle Du Mas’ sparkling rosé – a tempting proposition – is restricted to a whole bottle.

The dedicated menu of Mas des Infermières’ wines is available until August 23rd; see The Laslett for more information.

THE FILIPINO medium-bodied Don Papa Rum is a premium aged small batch spirit founded in 2012, sharing the phenomenon that is Filipino rum with the rest of the world.

Derived from Negros Occidental in the Philippines, also known as Sugarlandia, Don Papa is an easy-drinking rum, ideal for cocktails and just as pleasing neat.

Don Papa Rum

Unknown to many, the Philippines is part of an exclusive index of countries that produce the sugarcane used to make rum. The region has a long-established history within the rum craft, and although enjoyed locally, the regional spirit hardly saw global exportation.

Don Papa founder Stephen Carroll noticed the rich and flavourful rum emerging from the Philippines and decided to share it with the world, which led to his embarkment on cultivating the Don Papa Rum brand.

At first, the spirit delivers notes of fruitiness, such as sweet tangerines and apricots however, after the initial first sip, an all-rounded hint of sweet vanilla ice cream and toffee sauce elevated by cinnamon flavours, honey, candied fruits, and a whisper of citrus keeps you coming back for more.

Don Papa Rum

The rich and smooth rum provides the essence of Sugarlandia with every drink as it offers as a vehicle to the fruitful foothills of the active volcano Mount Kanlaon, upon which resides the finest sugarcane blades which supply the spirit with its delectable sweetness, its Black Gold molasses.

Matured in ex-bourbon American oak barrels, a unique climate ensures that optimal flavour saturates the rum. Subsequently, the blend sees Mount Kanlaon spring water integrated with 40% ABV, crafted by Don Papa’s skilled master blender.

Whether infused in caramel espresso martinis or refreshing daiquiris with a squeeze of lime juice — or simply appreciated neat — Don Papa Rum is a versatile spirit which can pair easily with diverse food plates and is sure to be adored by both cocktail lovers and prestigious rum connoisseurs alike.

SHAKING it up with a new campaign, luxury spirit brand Belvedere goes Western with three-minute long campaign starring Grammy-award winning artist Future and Academy Award winner Taika Waititi.

Cruising along dusty roads at sunset, the American rapper is seen with the new Belvedere 10, before going head-to-head with co-star and director Waititi, who unlock the bottle after an intricate handshake.

Speaking on his second video now for the brand, Waititi explained: “There is a fine line that allows humor and rebelliousness to exist within luxury. This campaign embodies a rare moment where this intersection meets. There is no doubt Belvedere is one of the coolest alcohol brands in the world.”

The new addition to the brand, retailing at £185, is encased in a brutalist style bottle that pays homage to the 10-step process of creating this vodka. The white hues mirror the liquid’s purity whilst the diamond-like chiseling pays homage to the Diamond Rye used to make it.

A STANDOUT collaboration between haute couture embroiderer Atelier Montex and Champagne house,
Perrier-Jouët sees the art of Champagne combined with the art of embroidery, as a precious adornment isa dded to a trio of Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque Vintage Champagnes.

Entitled ‘Ode à la Nature’ this edition is the result of a dialogue between two French houses that share a
vision of luxury, and excellence with artisanal savoir-faire aplenty.

Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque Vintage Champagne

On the partnership, Séverine Frerson Cellar Master says, after the Anémone edition in 2022 “Perrier-Jouët wanted to present the second edition of its Objets Extraordinaires Collection. This year, art and champagne meet once again through our collaboration with Ateliers Montex. Libellule reflects the essential nature of French excellence for our two houses, but also the importance of art and nature for Perrier-Jouët.”

On the synergy of the two houses, Frerson goes on to say, “Like the blends we are preparing, Atelier
Montex has blended techniques and materials to create these unique pieces of art. Just as in the making of my champagnes, time remains an essential part in the making of embroidery at the Atelier Montex.”

Of course, for more than 200 years, Perrier-Jouët has been known for drawing inspiration from the realms of art and nature, first championed by its founders and then by every generation since, and this
collaboration only strengthens the creative ties.

Séverine Frerson

On the design Séverine shares that, “Atelier Montex drew inspiration from Maison Perrier-Jouët’s exceptional Art Nouveau legacy – the largest private collection of French Art Nouveau in Europe – at the Maison Belle Epoque in Epernay, which was for many years the home of the founding family. One remarkable piece was the starting point for the Libellule creation: a walnut side table with sculpted legs representing dragonflies by Emile Gallé, the same Art Nouveau master who created the anemone motif that is the iconic emblem of both Maison Perrier-Jouët and its BelleEpoque vintage collection.”

Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque Vintage Champagne

And for two brands that pride themselves on excellence, it’s no surprise that the collaboration has been
long in the making, “It took a whole year of research, design, and development by Atelier Montex and each object is crafted by a single artisan for 75 hours. It was a true technical challenge because we wanted to make unique, contemporary, timeless objects representative of French excellence,” says Séverine.

by Felicity Williams

The Ode à la Nature edition is available at a retail price of 100,000 euros, see more on The Ode à la Nature Collection via perrier-jouet.com.

ACROSS the Thames from London’s famous Shakespeare’s Globe and the Tate Modern lies Hithe + Seek, perched on the third floor of The Westin London City.

Everyone can agree that when it comes to enjoying thoughtful food and drinks, a picturesque backdrop is a sought-after must in the heart of London. Hithe + Seek delivers exactly that, and with their new food and wine pairing menu, it’s not short of a delicious affair.

Interior

Curated by Head Chef Fabio De Paolis, who drew inspiration from the produce of countries he has visited over his career, celebrates the diversity and flavours from countries such as Italy, France, China and Algeria.

Fabio uses his experiences from across the globe to create an innovative menu encompassing dishes from ‘The New World’ and ‘The Old World’.

Bar

After making ourselves at home in the zen-like atmosphere of Hithe + Seek, we study the extensive menu and are pleasantly spoilt for choice, with an abundant of exquisite wine and cocktails. I start with the sweet classic Bee’s Knees cocktail before setting foot on our culinary journey.

We begin with the Lobster roll with tarragon, pickles and trout roe, along with Tuna tartare tacos with avocado puree, chives and finger lime – a fiesta of flavours that is perfect for those craving a fresh and zesty delight.

Starters

Next to grace our table is the Adobo chicken ballotine with capsicum puree, a richly seasoned dish that tantalises our taste buds.

Last of the savoury dishes and without a doubt the star of the show, is the signature Grilled Galatian octopus, on chickpea puree and drizzled with paprika oil – a dish I had set my eyes on after trolling through their Instagram.

It is a truly stunning plate of food and a much-needed taste of Spain. The fresh seafood dish paired with a glass of the softly aromatic Alois Lageder Manzoni Bianco ‘Forra’, provided an exquisite harmony of flavours.

Grilled Octopus

For me, a meal is never complete without ending on a sweet dish and there was one dessert that stood out to us, the decadent chocolate fondant with cardamon ice cream. We indulge in this chocolate delight and sip the last of our wine as we watch the city lights illuminate the sky.

Hithe + Seek offers a flawless experience from start to finish and I leave happy knowing I have found a secluded haven with delectable dishes.

EVE, the recently opened restaurant, bar and cafe located between the beautiful walls of the aparthotel Ember Locke, invites all those doing Dry January to have one last rendezvous before the end of the month.

Eve has collaborated with Everleaf, known for their award-winning, non-alcoholic aperitifs, sustainably sourced from botanicals. A limited-edition cocktail menu specially created for Dry January offers various tantalising mocktails and food pairing suggestions, which will surely get your taste buds buzzing.

Everleaf has composed three mocktails exclusive to Eve throughout January, which are all vastly different, ensuring a flavour for everyone.

The No’groni (£8.00) is perfect for those trying to hold onto the festivities of Christmas with flavours of Everleaf, Maple, Fresh Orange and Cinnamon. A Spiced Winter Spritz (£8.00) is created from Everleaf, Chili, Lime, Peppercorns and Soda, and the Hibiscus Frozen Margarita (£8.00) is ideal for those yearning for the summer days ahead with an ingredient list of Everleaf, Hibiscus, Fresh Lime and Agave.

As for the food pairing, a few of Eve’s most loved dishes are suggested to complement the non-alcoholic cocktails. The Chicken skewers with turmeric yoghurt and chilli (£15.00) make for a lovely light meal, the Ras el hanout lamb, baba ganoush (£16.00) and the Zhoug stonebass with smoked tomato chickpeas and toum (£16.00) are two other flavourful dishes to choose from.

The interiors exude elegance, and their classic food menu, created by Executive Chef Talia Prince, includes a diverse range of flavours from spicy to zingy to fresh, definitely making Eve not only great for Dry January but date nights, friendly catch-ups and impressive dinners too.

For all those who have come so far in their Dry January journey and want to celebrate one last time, Eve’s Dry January mocktail menu, in collaboration with Everleaf, will be sure to bring the month to a perfect ending with flavours which will tempt you to go back for more.
