IN THESE unprecedented times, it is essential to keep yourself busy, whether that means taking up yoga, making an attempt at banana- or sourdough bread or discovering new artists, who have been taking the world by storm. Here Glass presents a guide to our top ten favourite Korean pop albums and songs that are guaranteed to keep you entertained throughout lockdown.

One of the most anticipated albums in the world, BTS have released a sequel to their Map of the Soul series, titled 7. Here BTS are continuing their discussions of modern society, youth culture and reality of fame, while also experimenting with styles, philosophies (having previously blended in Nietzsche and Herman Hesse into their music) and lyrics, some of which were co-written by Ed Sheeran and Troye Sivan.

1 Amunorea: Any song by ZICO

The bad boy of Korean music scene has made a comeback with his new single, Any Song – a fusion of K-pop and hip hop that Zico is known for. Catchy, laid-back and with elevator music effect in the background, Any Song has become viral on social media thanks to the #AnySongChallenge that the singer initially started himself.

8 I give you my heart: Crash landing on you OST by IU

In 2020 the ultimate darling of Korean music IU has provided a soundtrack to one of the leading dramas of the year, Crash Landing On You. I Give You My Heart manages to capture the tenderness, magic and bittersweet love unravelling between a South Korean CEO and a North Korean general.

7 Your shampoo scent in the Flowers (OST part 3. Be Melodramatic) by Jang Beom-jun

Another soundtrack on our list that definitely shouldn’t be missed, Your Shampoo Scent in the Flowers from yet another leading Korean Drama, Be Melodramatic. Jang Beom-Jun’s upbeat melody and narrative lyrics fits in perfectly with the drama’s story of three best friends trying to navigate life and dating.

6 Self portrait by SUHO

The leader of the uber-famous boy band EXO has blessed our year with a long-awaited solo album, inspired by Impressionist art, particularly Van Gogh. With his music Suho not only demonstrates his strong vocals, but also presents a deeply emotional and self-reflective discussion of love and pain, concluding with, even though we all have scars, shouldn’t we still love?

5. Last Autumn by Heize

After experiencing a painful break-up, Heize has delivered a beautifully crafted mini-album Last Autumn, where she compares stages of life to the seasonal cycle. The album’s abundance of melancholy together with self-reflection and an unprecedented hope as the season changes makes Heize’s music a truly wholesome experience.

4 IT’z ME by ITZY

JYP Entertainment’s new girl group ITZY is back with another explosive album IT’z ME. The album has everything that the girls are now known for: on top of its playful rhythm and catchy lyrics, ITZY delivers its ‘devil may care’ attitude, ceaseless ferocity and messages of female empowerment.

3 However by 10cm

Originally a musical duo, Kwong Jung-yeol from 10cm has delivered another single, However, after he parted ways with Yoon Cheol-jong. However combines a magical melody with wistful lyrics that express a longing to be with a loved one – a message that perhaps will resonate with many during isolation.

2. Reality in BLACK by Mamamoo

With every album release, Mamamoo never ceases to surprise with its versatility and immeasurable talent. Now that the quartet has won Queendom, a Korean girl-group competition, Mamamoo is back with Reality in BLACK – a surprisingly dance-forward album with a dash of powerful ballads, that once again prove that Mamamoo’s vocals are ones of, if not the, best in the business.

1 The ReVe Festival Finale by Red Velvet

The final installation in the ReVe Festival trilogy, the Finale deserves the top spot on our list, as the album really shows why Red Velvet is one of the top girl groups in the industry. A perfect blend of Red Velvet’s concepts of bubbly on the one hand and R&B on the other, the album is empowering, experimental, weird, dreamy and simply lots of fun.

THE GLASS latest Spotify playlist for Spring 2017 is now available to listen and stream.

Here is our breakdown of each track in the playlist for your listening pleasure.

1. Often – Abhi Dijon

With insightful lyrics, Maryland R&D duo Abhi//Dijon returns to their signature low-key sounding sounds with Often. It’s about the sensation of remembering something significant with clarity and an acceptance of time passed”.

2. Bist du Down – Ace Tee, Kwam.e

Ace Tee’s first track of 2017, which evokes a sense of ‘90s R&B nostalgia – think stars that burned out prematurely such as Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopez from TLC and Aaliyah – will surely be a big hit this year. A bouncy verse from hip-hop artist Kwam.e adds something decidedly fresh.

3. Location (London remix) – Khalid, Little Simz

8. Goyard Bag – Fabolous, Lil Uzi Vert

Inspired by OutKast, the song originally appeared on Fabulous’ September mixtape Summertime Shootout 2.

9. Eye Luv U – Tiga

The Canadian producer releases Eye Luv U a track that seeps in his signature sounds inspired by a “pyramid that had been converted into a multi-purpose event space.”

10. Show you the Way – Thundercat, Michael McDonald

The track offers a vocal showcase of punchy lines and smooth bass. Show You the Way is the first song from his new album Drunk, which is out February 24th.

14. Invitations – Shakatak

From the English Jazz-Funk band’s third album Invitations, it landed at 24 on the official UK charts in September 1982.

15. Rather Be With You – Sinead Harnett

Signed to Virgin EMI, Sinead Harnett has already made noise on two multi-platinum UK number 1 albums (Rudimental’s Home and Disclosures’s Settle), and now hones her sound on her self-titled EP. Inspired by greats such as Whitney Houston and Micheal Jackson from an early age the sultry vocalist offers a low-slung electro-soul on tracks like Rather Be With You and more from her debut.

16. Rooftop (Pacific Heights & Benny Tones Remix) – Jordan Rakei, Pacific Heights

Rakei’s skills show on this dreamy, soulful remix of his latest track Rooftop by Pacific Heights and Benny Tones.

17. Nobody Else – Pat Lok Remix – Jarreau Vandal, Brasstracks

18.  Nobody Else – Pat Lok Remix

This track is a sure dancefloor burner, with Pat Lok’s signature production style written all over it, Nobody Else is the perfect track for Friday nights.

19. You Love Em (Ft. Emmavie) – ROM

22. Chapita (Ikonika Remix) – Mind Enterprises, Ikonika

Mind Enterprises is the one-man project of Andrea Tirone, who dabbles in funky rhythms and groovy pulses in his latest track, Chapita.

23. Estrelar – Marcos Valle

Originally released in 1983 by the Brazilian singer, instrumentalist, songwriter and record producer. Estrelar is a boogie dance track marketed as “workout music” at the time and went on to become Valle’s best-selling record.

24. Looking for Love – Chromatics

The Chromatics Johnny Jewel, Ruth Radelet, and the gang take us on a dusty, hypnotic Italo exploration that’s easy to get lost in.

25. Myenemy – Parcels

Myenemy is a punchy dance song driven by a crunchy funk bass line and strong vocal harmonies from young Australian funk-pop quintet Parcels.

26. The Night – Oslo Parks

The Night is a slice of electro-pop from the Brighton outfit’s second upload. It offers an upbeat rhythm that’s easily comparable to indie-dance mainstays Metronomy and Hot Chip, but there’s enough originality here to make it a worthwhile listen.

27. Watch Me Dance – Crackazat Remix – Tom Misch, Crackazat

Tom Misch – still only 21 years old – released Beat Tape 2 last year, a collection of tracks, ideas, and whimsical notions he’d recorded in his bedroom.

28. Thinking ‘Bout You – Decco Remix – Dua Lipa, Decco

Rising British singer Dua Lipa reveals a deeper side to her songwriting on new ballad Thinking ‘Bout You. Remixed here by Decco.

29. Nights (feat. W. Darling) – Snow Tha Product

Bilingual rapper and singer Claudia Feliciano, who goes by the name Snow tha Product, switches between hardened rhymes and bright melodic hooks with an emphasis on the former.

30. CRYBABY – Abra

Abra’s CRYBABY makes good on the promise of her exciting back catalog. The self-produced instrumental is all 808 jams, electrofunk basslines and crashing synths—the type of mix that suits bedrooms, car stereos and clubs alike.

31. Dollas Bills – Syd, Steve Lacy

Syd delivers Dollas Bills on her debut album, Fin. The album features vocal contributions from The Internet’s Steve Lacy, who also produced the single “All About Me,” and up-and-coming Atlanta singer 6LACK. Hit-Boy, MeLo-X, Rahki.

32. Dapper – Domo Genesis

Southern California rapper Domo Genesis was one of the original founding members of the Odd Future crew, and has released a handful of mixtapes over the past few years. But he’s only just now getting around to releasing Genesis, his debut album.
