AS I check in at the Hotel Café Royal a member of The Set Collection, the lobby’s oversized Murano chandelier catches my eye as it dazzles in the sunlight.

While sipping my welcome glass of champagne, I can’t help but notice the designer-clad clientele wondering through the lobby. This hotel oozes refinement and is steeped in history since its inception in 1865, welcoming illustrious guests of the past, including Winston Churchill, Oscar Wilde, David Bowie and Princess Diana to name a few.

Cafe Royal Exterior

This property, with its 159 guest rooms and suites, is positioned in the most central location in the capital’s Regent Street, adjacent to the restaurants in Soho, the art galleries in Mayfair, and the buzz of Theatreland. It is the perfect destination from which to explore all that London has to offer from early in the morning until late at night.

Cafe Royal Lobby

The gilded swoon-worthy regal central staircase entices its visitors to dispense with the lift. Each of the guest rooms are furnished with neat, contemporary and minimalistic furnishings in tranquil colour schemes, complimented by Carrara-enrobed grey marble bathrooms with rainfall showers, stone sunken bathtubs, and his & hers sink units.

The bright hues of the plentiful Etro amenities add a pop of colour, which when opened, infuse a satisfying fragrance to our room. Our grand junior suite’s floor-to-ceiling triple-glazed windows, dressed with automatic curtains, provides an exciting view towards Piccadilly Circus – such a treat when waking in the morning to soak up the silent view before the daily commuters and effervescent tourists arrive.

Akasha Holistic Wellbeing London

The Set Collection’s three founding member hotels, Hotel Café Royal in London, Lutetia in Paris, and Conservatorium in Amsterdam, have joined forces with Therabody, the innovative leader in wellness technology products, which originally established the hand-held massage device, Theragun.

Their current range of products includes devices designed to treat a range of physical ailments for the relief of stress and tension, and to enhance recovery after physical exercise or training. The Therabody treatment menu is available in the dedicated Therabody Suites in each of these hotels or alternatively, massages and facials can be carried out in the comfort of guest suites, offering a private and bespoke experience.

Grand Junior Suite

I head down to the Akasha spa and swim in the 60-foot heated indoor pool before my facial. The sound of therapeutic acoustics seduces me into a relaxed state in the Therabody Suite, where Sascha, my skilled therapist, explains how the TheraFace device will aid my treatment.

As I lay on the heated bed, I succumb to her expert manual facial massage using U Beauty creams and serums whereby she then enlists the help of the Theraface device that omits satisfying microcurrents to tighten my skin. I eventually depart an hour later not only feeling refreshed, but literally glowing which, together with a stay here, genuinely makes my day.

POSITIONING health and wellbeing at the heart of the guest experience, The Dorchester has just unveiled a new collection of wellness treatments for 2024. Famed for its expansive menu of pampering experiences, The Dorchester Spa continues to impress with its sparkling offerings.

The Dorchester Spa

To start, MLX quartz beds and Welnamis relaxation beds have been added to the spa. The MLX Quartz Beds – influenced by ‘Psammo Therapy’ – provide a cocooning effect alongside gentle gravity inversion, which promotes soft spinal stretching and anti-inflammatory action.

The treatments offered are predominantly centred around sound healing techniques, with singing bowls bringing therapeutic benefits and tranquillity. Guests can also enjoy a poultice massage, which further detoxes the body from stress and worry. Based upon healing traditions from Egypt, Morocco and Japan, the treatment beds are certain to ease and revive after a long day of work.

The Dorchester Spa

Meanwhile, the Welnamis relaxation loungers situated in the Relaxation Room tap into similar audio-centred treatments. Known for its Binaural Vibro-acoustic treatment experience, Welnamis invites guests into a meditative landscape via multi-layered binaural acoustic audio.

Proving to support the immune system function, reduce stress, regulate sleep patterns and reduce signs of chronic pain and fatigue, Welnamis offers four programmes – stress relief, mindfulness, PowerNap and Awareness – for a customised guest experience.

For those opting to try one of The Dorchester’s treatments, visitors will be delighted to hear of ishga‘s arrival at The Dorchester Spa and The Spa at 45 Park Lane. Having previously been introduced at The Spa at Coworth Park, the Scottish natural seaweed brand prides itself on organic, sustainable skincare. Signature ishga treatments include the ishga poultice massage and the ishga detox body wrap.

The Dorchester Spa

Alongside ishga, Carol Joy London offers an array of science-led, results-driven skincare products. Harnessing the power of ingredients such as Golden Millet Oil and pure collagen, Carol Joy’s Diamond Facial and Oxygen Facial treatments rejuvenate and refresh the skin with the help of nutrients and antioxidants.

Similarly, Valmont’s cutting-edge products and techniques deliver undeniable glowing skin and a nourished complexion. Signature treatments from the brand include the Valmont Elixir des Glaciers – an indulgent offering featuring two cleansing sessions, three massages and four masks – and the Valmont Lift from the Peaks. The latter of the two concentrates on alleviating stress in areas prone to wrinkles and toning facial muscles.

The Dorchester Spa

Finally, Dr Gout – a world-renowned pioneer and thought leader in evidence-based aesthetic medicine – has introduced her unparalleled know-how to The Dorchester Spa with an exclusive residency. Dr Gout has curated a LAM Luxe menu of treatments for the spa which focuses on “revealing your unique and natural beauty whilst making you look and feel your best.” From pore-refining facials to anti-wrinkle injections, Dr Gout’s treatments are known to promote radiance, boost collagen and sculpt the face.

After enjoying a treatment, visitors of The Dorchester Spa can settle down and enjoy a selection of healthy snacks. Teresa O’Farrell – global head of wellness and spa for The Dorchester Collection – has worked alongside on-property chefs to craft a wellness menu of revitalising culinary delights such as seared salmon, a rice paper rainbow vegetable wrap, a berry bowl or a wind-down salad.

Intertwining inner healing with external wellbeing, it’s evident that The Dorchester Spa is an oasis of peacefulness in the bustling metropolis.

WEST LONDON’S Bvlgari Spa invited Glass to indulge in their new transformative spa journeys dedicated to recovery, sleep and longevity.

The three expansions see state-of-the-art technology, such as the Hyperbaric Oxygen Capsule and a Zerobody Dry Float alongside an Ice Bath, all supplying mind and body revitalisation in the luxurious confines of the Bvlgari Hotel multilevel spa.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Capsule

The Longevity Journey sees a Hyperbaric Oxygen Capsule, ideal for those looking for an all-encompassing restorative treatment. Through oxygen therapy within a compressed environment, the innovative development facilitates healing, relieves inflammation, supports anti-ageing and aids regulation of the metabolism.

As for the Sleep Journey, the session offers a Zerobody Dry Float bed, which provides an anti-gravity experience, presenting a 60-minute treatment for those who need to disconnect from reality and surrender to a meditative state. The service is ideal for those who struggle with anxiety, stress and depression and further enhances sleep quality.

Also beneficial for bodily performance, the Dry Float bed has been proven to aid blood circulation and oxygen distribution throughout the body — alongside its capacities to relieve physical pain.

Concluding the new techno-advanced additions, the Recovery Journey sees Hot and Cold therapy, initially prompted by the demand for athlete wellbeing and bodily function.

The experiences see a back and forth between an ice plunge and a sauna beneficial for accelerating the recovery period following intense physical exercise.

The treatment further aids the functionality of the metabolism, improves endurance and boosts immunity while combating fatigue.

Dry Float

Alongside the recently added treatments, the Bvlgari Spa is renowned for its luxury indoor swimming pool, known to be one of the longest in London.

The spa further offers a Studio space where one can enjoy various classes such as restorative yoga, Pilates and Barre, amongst other services such as sound healing. Additionally, the treatment centre offers training and fitness services focusing on health endurance and lifestyle improvement.

Whether it be to remove yourself from everyday pressures or rejuvenate your body after a stressful week, the Bvlgari Spa, situated in the heart of Knightsbridge, will leave you feeling reborn and ready to take on whatever awaits.

STEEPED IN history, The Retreat at Elcot Park is one of Berkshire’s most luxurious hotels. Bought by Lady Elizabeth Shelley – the mother of famed Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley – in 1844,  The Retreat is an oasis of tranquillity hidden amongst the North Wessex Downs.

Boasting sixteen acres of grounds, two magnificent restaurants, a wellness spa and an array of welcoming communal spaces – including a spectacular whiskey library – the boutique hotel intertwines modern facilities with countryside living.

The Retreat Elcot Park

The Retreat Elcot Park

Upon entering the Grade II listed 18th-century country house, I am immediately impressed by The Retreat’s incredible hospitality. The staff eagerly greet us with a glass of wine – a signature welcome for all Signet Collection hotels – and attend to our every need.

Whilst sipping my glass of white wine, the renovated mansion’s interiors – designed by Taylor and Turner – spark endless interest. Marvellous historical paintings adorn the walls, tall windows provide views over Berkshire’s rolling fields, and original fireplaces exude additional warmth and comfort.

The Retreat Elcot Park

The rooms echo the magnificence of the hotel’s entrance. Featuring four-poster beds, bespoke William Edwards crockery, smart televisions and eye-catching copper bathtubs, tradition is playfully intertwined with opulent décor. Consisting of 55 rooms – including three prestigious suites named after the estates’ former owners – The Retreat is not shy of options.

The Retreat Elcot Park

As families parade through the lobby with their furry friends, it becomes clear that The Retreat’s allure isn’t limited to a sole demographic. From city workers seeking respite to couples looking for a romantic getaway, the hotel caters to all.

For those keen to visit during the warmer months, The Retreat offers a range of activities to enjoy under the summer sun, such as Jenga, Connect 4, falconry, croquet, motorbiking and tennis. Moreover, it’s impossible to not gravitate towards The Retreat’s heated outdoor infinity pool – part of the hotel’s state-of-the-art wellness facilities.

The Retreat Elcot Park

Housing an additional hydrotherapy pool, Himalayan salt sauna, aroma steam room, salt flotation pod and a sparkling gym, The Retreat’s Signet Spa has all faces covered. During my stay, I opt for a GAIA body massage to see if the skincare brand’s natural products live up to their flawless reputation. And I am not disappointed.

My masseuse, Joane, exhibits her wealth of expertise while teaching me about GAIA’s paraben-free, sulphate-free, silicone-free ingredients. Available to hotel guests and members of The Retreat’s lifestyle club, the Signet Spa is a must-visit during one’s stay.

Having built up an appetite after my massage, I decided to visit Yü – one of The Retreat’s dining options. Serving dinner from Wednesday to Saturday and lunch from Thursday to Saturday, Yü offers delectable pan-Asian cuisine.

Standout dishes include the Japanese miso chicken, miso-marinated black cod and the signature sushi platters. And if you find yourself craving more of Yü’s culinary delights during your stay, do not fret. The Retreat also offers sushi-making workshops led by its sushi master, George, where one will learn all the secret tips and tricks to making the best sushi rolls.

Alternatively, for guests wanting to grab a lighter bite or a hearty breakfast, 1772 Brasserie is the place to be. Named after the year the original house was built, the second dining option offers a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere. Offering traditional Sunday roasts and carefully curated afternoon tea arrangements, it’s evident that The Retreat has a real knack for food and drink.

The Retreat Elcot Park

Ushering in Spring break with an egg hunt, an artisan market and complimentary kids dining, there’s no better time to escape to The Retreat. Located just a 45-minute train journey from London, The Retreat is the perfect countryside getaway.

Nightly rates start at £180 per night on a B&B basis for two people including taxes and fees.

WHEN The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands announced its ‘Deep Blue Prescription’, a four-day wellness programme designed to reduce stress and anxiety via maximum exposure with the ocean, I was intrigued.

In recent months, three separate health professionals had told me I was heading for burn-out – a prescription for Prozac was even on the cards. So what did I have to lose? Five days of swimming, spa treatments and soulful staring at the horizon certainly sounded relaxing but little did I know, it would shift something a lot deeper.

Spa at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands

Spa at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands

According to the Californian marine biologist and author Dr Wallace J Nichols, being in or around water has profound emotional and psychological benefits: better sleep, clearer focus, a deeper sense of inner calm – even improved longevity.

It’s been scientifically proven that being around water – and indeed the colour blue – triggers the body’s para-sympathetic nervous system (the opposite of fight or flight). Essentially, water chills us out. And let’s face it, the water in the Maldives is like nowhere else.

The Ritz-Carlton is one of the newer, bigger resorts in the Maldives. It’s globally recognised for its unconventional minimalist architecture. Villas, of which there are 100, are spherical open-fronted cocoon-like orbs designed by the late great Kerry Hill (of Aman fame). After a mere few hours in my villa, gazing at an uninterrupted vista of blues, I could feel my neurons firing at a slower rate.

Two bedroom beach pool villa at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands

Ocean pool villa at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands

Each morning, I cycled the 3km sandy trail around the resort (three connected islands) before breakfast, eyes fixed on the horizon (potholes permitting). I took hourly dips in the ocean. I had one of the best massages ever in the floating UFO, I mean wellness pavilion, that houses the hotel’s Bamford spa. I drank champagne on the top deck of a dhoni with dolphins pirouetting around me in the surf.

I grazed on mango California rolls, reef-fish ceviche and yellowfin tuna next to the sexiest pool in the world (circular, of course). I was perfectly happy on my own, decompressing. And when I did feel the urge to seek out company, it was easy to find. One evening, I joined two delightful American couples (tech whizzes from San Fran and the son of a banana empire) for cocktails on the beach followed a flame-lit Maldivian barbeque. It was a riot.

By day five, I was feeling so clear-headed and optimistic, I started scribbling lists on hotel stationery – things I wanted to do (or do better), new daily routines I wanted to put in place, new objectives to aim for. I sent postcards to people I’d been neglecting. I made a vow to myself to slow down; to make wellbeing a priority; to listen to my body.

Taking time out to focus on the giant swell of the ocean (and one’s infinitesimally small place in the world) from the comfort of a luxury resort of this calibre is, without question, a privilege.

I, for one, will forever be grateful for those humbling blue hues.

‘The Deep Blue Prescription’ wellness package is available at the The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands until 30 November 2024.

ECO-RESORT, Gili Lankanfushi Maldives, has unveiled their new spa menu at the Meera Spa, with offerings such as Moonbathing in one’s exclusive villa and treatments known as Pairing Journey’s centred around the natural elements.

Meera Spa, belonging to the Gili Lankanfushi resort, is celebrated for its holistic therapies and breathtaking views with its overwater backdrop.

As part of the new menu, the spa offers multi-treatments representative of the natural elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space.

The Meera Spa at Gili Lankanfushi Maldives

The experiences transpire over two days and combine some of Meera Spa’s most transformative therapy treatments. Each Pairing Journey is 150 minutes in length and guarantees revitalisation and relaxation.

All journeys are unique, with Earth encompassing a grounding experience as it merges the practices of Shirodara and Foot Reflexology. Water works to detoxify the body as it constitutes Meera’s Detox Cellulite Treatment — brought about by a deep massage and herbal powders which cooperate to eliminate toxins in the body, enhancing skin texture — and the abdomen-focused therapeutic massage Chi Nei Tsang.

The Meera Spa at Gili Lankanfushi Maldives

For those seeking an energy-boosting experience which stimulates healthy blood flow, the Fire Pairing Journey does just that. Aiding the relief of arthritis and rheumatism-causing symptoms, the treatment merges the power of Choorna Swedana and a deep tissue massage known as the Deep Muscle Fusion.

Air seeks to redeem connections and discover love with its Abhyanga Massage, utilising Indian Ayurveda oil and Warm Stone Therapy incorporating hot basal stones. The final Pairing Journey on the menu is Space, a treatment aiming to strengthen intuition by bringing together Tibetan Singing Bowl therapy and an Indian Head Massage.

The Meera Spa at Gili Lankanfushi Maldives

An intriguing addition to Meera Spa’s menu is Moonbathing, an experience guests of Gili Lankanfushi can indulge in in the comfort of their villa. Each overwater villa contains a roof where guests can relax, lie down, and moon-bath, a practice known to better one’s quality of sleep and reduce stress.

In women, moon-bathing boosts hormones, resulting in a positive shift in their cycle and fertility, with the possibility of improving menopausal symptoms. The experience is enhanced by a roof deck star bed covered in linen, furnishing the ultimate relaxation space to immerse oneself and absorb the moonlight.

The Meera Spa at Gili Lankanfushi Maldives

Additionally, for those who struggle to fall asleep, the Mindful Dream journey offered at Meera Spa will support guests through a good night’s sleep via breathing exercises, aromatherapy, sound healing, and a massage, a treatment also undertaken in one’s private villa.

“We are thrilled to introduce these transformative new experiences for our guests, building on the world-class spa offering here at Gili Lankanfushi. Our discerning clientele – many of whom are repeat guests – have come to expect the very best when it comes to wellness, and we are proud to provide them with truly memorable, cutting edge and holistic therapies – all available exclusively on our beautiful island paradise.” — Eka Rianti, Meera Spa Manager

LOCATED in Knightsbridge next to Hyde Park lies Bvlgari Hotel – the Italian jewellery brand’s sole London resort. Embodying luxurious elegance, when the hotel opened in 2012, it was the most expensive hotel in London. Now, the hotel continues to amaze and enthral with its state-of-the-art facilities. The hotel has everything from a full gymnasium and physical training centre with an on-site personal training team to a 47-seat screening room.

However, it’s impossible to talk about the hotel without mentioning its ultimate attraction – its beautiful spa. Fitted with 11 single treatment rooms, 1 private spa suite and a 25-metre, three-lane swimming pool, the space is breathtakingly designed.

Teaming up with some of the world’s most prestigious skincare brands, Bvlgari Spa is setting new standards in the world of wellbeing. In particular, the spa offers a series of treatments from GROUND Wellbeing. Founded by Peigín Crowley in 2020’s lockdown, the luxury brand centres itself around holistic healing and utilises 100% natural, plant-based ingredients.

“It is a privilege to collaborate with The Bvlgari Spa, this is a team of intuitive therapists with an innate ability to tune into the body and to harness their skills for the greater good whether that be for insomnia, stress or hormonal health. Sincere wellness lives at the heart of this team making them a truly special partner for GROUND,” explains Crowley.

Upon entering the spa and speaking to Peigín, GROUND’s mission becomes irrefutably clear. Moving away from traditional beauty/spa treatments, Crowley has centred the brand around more intimate affairs. The products have been expertly formulated to tackle issues such as anxiety, insomnia, hormone fluctuations, burnout and gut health.

As a result, GROUND continues to evolve and mature with its customer’s needs. In 2021, the Balancing CBD Balm and Balancing Massage Ritual were launched to address PMS, fertility and pregnancy journeys. Meanwhile, in 2022, the brand turned its gaze towards Cancer Care and released The Barróg Collection. Emphasising stress relief and comfort, the collection provides respite for those going through active treatment and other surgeries.

With her products being stocked in affluent hotels such as The Rosewood in Hong Kong, The Four Seasons in Boston and The Waldorf Astoria in Berlin, Beverley Hills and Edinburgh, it comes as no surprise that Peigín’s brand fits in perfectly at Bvlgari Spa.

In a celebration of tranquillity, Bvlgari and GROUND have joined forces to create a series of relaxing massages – including the Bvlgari Spa exclusive, the WANDERING. Available as a 90 or 120-minute treatment, the massage centres itself around the Vagus nerve – the heart of one’s parasympathetic nervous system. Perfect for those needing to connect with the inner self, the full-body massage works to calm stress and hormonal fluctuations.

As I enter one of the spa’s single treatment rooms, I am offered the choice between three of GROUND’s aromatic oils. My incredible masseuse, Marzena Podcasinska, provides me with further insight as I opt for a Sweet Orange and Geranium concoction – perfect for rebalancing one’s inner strength and fortitude.

Connecting the brain with the longest cranial nerve, the massage leaves me feeling relaxed, revitalised and deeply rested. Alongside the WANDERING treatment, the team offer a variety of different massages, each tailored to individual needs and problem areas.

Intertwining sustainability, wellbeing and self-care, Bvlgari and GROUND are a match made in heaven. For those feeling particularly stressed or anxious, a GROUND treatment at The Bvlgari Spa will certainly remedy and restore your body.

Treatments are available for 30 minutes (£110), 60 minutes (£210), 90 minutes (£310), or 120 minutes (£370). For more information and to book, please visit here.

UPON entering any new space, first impressions always count – and the one left by The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa is nothing but noteworthy.

Located on one of the world’s most famous crescents, the hotel already boasts a very impressive reputation. The architectural chef-d’œuvre – which is a Grade 1 listed building – was built between 1767 and 1775 by John Wood the Younger and is also one of UNESCO’s 812 World Heritage Sites.

Bath

Despite being located incredibly close to the centre of Bath, which is an equally beautiful city, the hotel feels insulated and intimate, transporting its guests to a Georgian dreamscape.

As I walk through the front door, I am immediately struck by The Royal Crescent’s stately grandeur. Ceilings are impossibly high and trimmed with frills and embellishments, fires are lit below decadent mantelpieces, and period portraits also adorn every wall.

As a result, the hotel is ideal for anyone aspiring to experience a quintessentially English getaway. At a time when architectural and interior design trends see many opting for minimalist, simple décor, The Royal Crescent is a much-needed breath of fresh air.

Suite

Moreover, as I am shown to my room – the John Wood Suite – I can’t help but take notice of the hotel’s beautiful views. With one side of the building overlooking its private gardens and the other toward the city of Bath, it’s hard to imagine a better view of the golden-hued streets.

Retaining its focus on classicism and tradition, I am greeted with a canopied, four-poster bed, tall windows, a personal fireplace – and, to consolidate its refined allure, an accompanying Tchaikovsky soundtrack playing gently from the room’s television.

Taking you back in time through its architecture and interior design, the hotel is a monolith of Georgian beauty. However, that doesn’t mean the hotel hasn’t accounted for its contemporary clientele. The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa offers modern comfort thanks to its stable internet connection, sophisticated bathrooms and even the latest Dyson hairdryers.

Interior of suite

After spending the afternoon exploring a few of the city’s attractions, I eagerly returned to the hotel for dinner. I had previously heard tales of the hotel’s delectable cuisine, so I was eager to find out if there was truth to the rumours – and there certainly was.

Montagu’s Mews is The Royal Crescent’s glamorous restaurant and bar. Named after Elizabeth Montagu, the original owner of No.16 Royal Crescent, the in-house dining location is often praised for its fresh, local ingredients and beautifully composed dishes. Head Chef Martin Blake has created a series of gastronomic delights for those visiting the stylish location.

Having gained a place in the prestigious Michelin Guide in 2023, it comes as no surprise that every dish surpasses all expectations. To start, I decided to opt for the Waldorf salad, which, upon arrival, strayed far from the dish’s traditional presentation.

Arriving with floral adornments, the dish was perfectly circular in form and harmonious in texture. Poached pear meets candied walnut and confit grape to conceive a fresh amalgamation of the traditional ingredients.

Starter

Next, I browsed the menu and opted for a ribeye steak as my main. Despite being paired with its usual accompaniments – onion rings, chunky chips and cress salad – the steak was expertly prepared and far beyond one’s standard ribeye.

Cooked to tender perfection, the meat was lean and brimming with flavour. Furthermore, the meat is served with mushroom duxelles, which marvellously combines the dish’s gentle seasoning and adds further earthy textural intrigue. Paired with a glass of red wine, this steak can do no wrong.

Dining Area

For my dessert, it was particularly difficult to make a decision. Guided by the hotel’s expert staff, I eventually landed on the rhubarb tart. Making a seasonal appearance on Montagu’s Mews menu, the tart made for the ideal denouement to my meal.

Soft, airy and gentle, it’s a dessert you explore the more you eat it, with the acidity of the rhubarb finely cutting through the dish.

Pairing each course with a delectable non-alcoholic drink – in the spirit of Dry January – I was, similarly, highly impressed with the bar team. As the bar team poured my first drink at the table and a colour-changing elixir emerged, it was clear I was in good hands.

Formulating unique, exciting mocktails utilising spirits from Three Spirit UK, the drinks were as interesting as their alcoholic counterparts.

With incredible staff attending to your every need, delicious cuisine and beautiful interiors, The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa is a must-visit for those spending some time in Bath.

REBALANCE BATH – Bath’s festival of wellbeing – is making a poignant return in 2024 following its hugely successful inaugural event last year.

Having been named the UK’s No.1 spa city, the Bath Business Improvement District (BID) has worked tirelessly to provide an exciting, invigorating and uplifting programme of events. From fragrance profiling events to tree identification walks, the festival’s schedule has something for everyone.

Having recently visited the wellness capital, we’re here to give you a rundown on the unmissable events taking place.

To start, it comes as no surprise that The Roman Baths are a perfect place to soak up the history and culture of the city. Multiple events will take place at the cultural epicentre including silent discos and laughter yoga – a new form of practice led by The Vitality Studio.

Focusing on forms of exercise that sustain and entertain, The Roman Baths and their 2,000 years of history provide the ideal backdrop for the festival’s activities.

The Roman Baths

Moreover, if you want to relax and unwind whilst admiring Bath’s warm mineral-rich waters, Thermae Bath Spa is the place to visit. The Romans believed that the hot springs found deep beneath Bath have divine healing powers, and it’s difficult to disagree with them.

Upon entering Thermae Bath Spa, I immediately felt more at ease. Intersecting heritage and expertise with contemporary design, the spa’s elegant aesthetic embodies luxury tranquillity.

Thermae Bath Spa

Thermae’s baths are all delightful, but the open-air Rooftop Pool is particularly inviting. Visitors can explore the spa’s various amenities before working their way to the top floor to enjoy sparkling city views. One can also reach new heights by visiting the spa’s Celestial Relaxation Room.

Described as a ‘serene, dream-like environment’, the Celestial Relaxation Room takes visitors on an interstellar journey. The room is filled with soft, twinkling lights to mirror the undulating glow of stars across our night sky.

Influenced by the work of William Herschel and Caroline Herschel – Bath-based astronomers who discovered the planet Uranus – the Celestial Relaxation Room is yet another way Thermae Bath Spa pays homage to the city’s roots.

Thermae Bath Spa

Similarly, for those hoping to look after mind, body and spirit, The Soul Spa lies just a stone’s throw away from Thermae Bath Spa. Since opening in 2019, this spa has been introducing innovative, trailblazing treatments – such as their sound baths.

During a sound bath, one enjoys the melodic sounds of crystal singing bowls and slowly enters a deep, meditative space. As I enjoyed a sound bath, I felt time drift away along with any busy thoughts of the outside world. To celebrate the festival, the sound bath experience will be half-price throughout ReBalance Bath’s duration and will take place four times a day, seven days a week.

VR Dream Odyssey

The Soul Spa is also offering a VR meditative experience titled Dream Odyssey. Equipped with an Oculus VR headset, guests can choose between a selection of digital landscapes and goals before starting the virtual experience.

VR Dream Odyssey

As an additional treat – after having enjoyed a few relaxing treatments or workshops – look no further than Henry’s. The independent dining location utilises locally-sourced ingredients to craft some of the most precious dishes in the city.

Recognised in the Michelin guide and located on the beautiful Saville Row, the restaurant’s celeriac and apple soup makes for an exquisite midday entree. For those visiting later in the evening, five-course and seven-course menus provide harmonious and intricate gastronomic offerings. Maintaining an emphasis on supporting the city’s independent, local businesses, Henry’s is the perfect place to grab a bite.

Bath

With such an impressive selection of enchanting activities on offer, it’s evident that the festival will entice visitors, old and new, to the streets of Bath.

by Sophie Richardson

The festival will run from 25th January to the 18th of February with over 190 events taking place across the city. For more information and to book events, please visit Bath BID’s Welcome to Bath website.

THE RECENTLY refurbished Maroma, a Belmond Hotel, which returned last summer, has just announced their new Maroma Spa by Guerlain.

Marking the first Guerlain spa in Latin America, the space is a sanctuary for transformative spirituality. The spa combines wellness and the significance of nature and vitality, bringing its guests unique Guerlain treatments inspired by Mayan culture.

Moroma Hotel Spa by Guerlain

The spa offers therapeutic rituals motivated by natural elements of fire, water, air and earth, as well as ancient methods and the Melipona bee, a signifier of spiritual resonance. The Bee Healing Ritual is a honey-based treatment known for its healing effects and makes use of Guerlain’s Abeille Royale collection.

Moroma Hotel Spa by Guerlain

For those who want to experience a getaway within the walls of Maroma Spa, various treatments inspired by distinguishing destinations will do the trick. The Purifying Cenote is a moisturising, revitalising treatment inspired by the Riviera Maya’s cenotes.

The Talisman of Immunity is a treatment merging the Black Orchid consisting of anti-ageing properties with black obsidian, a Mexican stone which helps one find harmony.

Moroma Hotel Spa by Guerlain

Various other unique treatments include the frequency of buzzing bees, healing vibrations that stimulate the brain, balance energy and promote connection with nature. The Underwater Meditation is an unparalleled experience, made up of gentle movements and singing bowls alongside a Temazcal ritual or a constellation massage which aligns with the cosmos.

The spa also offers yoga and mindfulness workshops, as well as its own apothecary where guests can educate themselves on herbs, prepare them and then integrate them into healing therapies. The Healing Remedies Workshop is interactive and teaches guests how to make balms, scrubs and other products using a copper alembic.

Moroma Hotel Spa by Guerlain

The spa’s interior was designed by Tara Bernerd & Partners and includes nine treatment rooms featuring local design elements, such as geometric shapes and artisanal objects crafted by the design studio in collaboration with local artists. There are landscapes of the jungle and handmade pots containing lush greenery.

Moroma Hotel Spa by Guerlain

The reception area oozes relaxation with its display of hand-painted Saltillo tiles and other pieces, such as carved millwork with traditional Mayan patterns featured on it. Post-treatment, guests can use the steam room or explore scenic gardens surrounded by trees — ideal way to spend some leisure time.

For those interested in the endangered Melipona bee, the hotel offers workshops with a professional Mayan Beekeeper who guides guests through the importance of the species.

MOST people will agree that listening to waves crashing onto a beach is great way to relax. I recently had that pleasure – not on a beach but as part of a spa treatment harmonised with the sound of the sea hitting the shore then fading away.

Or so it seemed as the therapist did her work, the mood music played and I blissed out. I was the beneficiary of the just launched Blue Health spa and wellness package at Seaham Hall, a boutique hotel situated on Durham’s bleak but beautiful North Sea coast.

The treatment took place at the hotel’s Serenity Spa and began, unexpectedly, with the therapist washing my feet in warm scented water as she went through the preliminaries, leaving me in an already calm state – much better than walking into a therapy room and being directed to the massage couch after a few brief exchanges.

I then underwent a rejuvenating 60-minute back massage and facial using sweet-smelling oils and creams produced by ishga, an organic skincare brand derived from mineral-rich seaweeds harvested from the Outer Hebrides in northwest Scotland.

Indoor Pool

Next, I was led into to the Swell Relaxation Suite for an immersive sound experience based on rousing music created by traditional Gaelic instruments. Via headphones, it plunged me into an even more relaxed state and I practically floated back to my suite half an hour later.

It was a struggle to resist sinking into the comfy super king-sized bed awaiting me. Instead, I returned to the Spa to check out what else it had to offer. Plenty, it turned out, including a 20-metre pool, gym, outdoor hot tubs, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam rooms, plus an assortment of treatments.

Sauna

Outdoor Jacuzzi

Independently owned and designated North of England Hotel 2023 by The Times, Seaham Hall is a grand 18th century country house set in 37 acres that was once the marital home of Lord Byron.

After serving time as a whisky smuggling conduit during the US Prohibition era and, more mundanely, as a hospital and nursing home, it was expensively refurbished and turned into a luxury hotel in 1997, with the 5 Bubble-rated Serenity Spa located discreetly in a modern oval shaped building.

Exterior of Seaham Hall

Seaham Hall’s outer Georgian splendour continues within, intermixed with plenty of contemporary glamour. My suite, one of 21, was more than generous in size with a separate lounge area and spacious bathroom, its colourful, modish décor offset by elegant floor to ceiling sash windows that looked out on to the gardens. And let’s not forget that bed, which would have done Morpheus proud.

Downstairs, The Dining Room offered an interesting taster menu in a formal, Chandelier-lit setting, while the laid-back Ozone served up tasty pan-Asian cuisine amid the Cherry Blossom vibe of the Serenity Spa. Afternoon cream teas and light bites were available from the Bar & Lounge.

Inside one of the suites

Although one could comfortably spend one’s entire stay here without ever leaving the grounds, guests are encouraged to experience the benefits of being near the sea in keeping with Seaham Hall’s wellness ethos.

The beach is only 10 minutes away by foot and I joined a group for a walk along the shore on an autumn day that was typically blustery but graced by a cloudless blue sky. We were in search of sea glass, remnants of discarded coloured glass from one-time local bottle-making factories, pummelled and smoothed by the sea for more than a century, each tide bringing in fresh finds for collectors that come from all over.

Having managed to bag a few of the gem-like stones ourselves, we proceeded to the former mining town of Seaham, where we came across the weary-looking Tommy, a striking 3m tall statue of a WW1 soldier perched on the seafront.

The following day I was back down on the beach, this time kitted out in a wetsuit for a spot of kayaking under the expert supervision of local firm Adventure Access. Others chose paddle boarding. It was windy again but thankfully we were confined to the harbour and marina, and so sheltered from the choppy seas. Still, there were enough swells rolling in to cause a few flutters followed by the satisfaction of arriving back on land with no more than wet feet.

The morning was rounded off with a hearty brunch and hot drink at waterside bar and café Flamingo. Then it was back to the hotel for a couple of hours in the spa before checking out, feeling utterly invigorated from my weekend get-away.
