Glass speaks to model DEVA CASSEL about her career in fashion and whether she plans on following in her famous parents’ footsteps in becoming an actor.

Deva Cassel is still in the midst of figuring out who she is. Though her name may seem familiar, and her appearance reminds you of that classic European beauty found in Baroque paintings, the 18-year-old model looks like she’s becoming someone hard to forget.

As the eldest daughter of Hollywood acting royalty, Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel, she is no stranger to stardom and what comes with it. But rather than following in the footsteps of her mother and father, she is keen to forge a path in the fashion industry, at least for now. Cassel’s journey into mainstream media is slow but considered, one that is already cultivating intense interest. Having just graduated from high school, it seems as if she is ready to step out of the shadows and spread her wings.

Photographer: Bojana Tatarska

With both your parents being actors, did you have to travel a lot growing up and spend time on set with them? If so, do you have a particularly favourite memory?

Yes, for a while I travelled as much as they did and so [would be] on set etc. I have been to many different locations all over the world and I wish to travel to some of them again now that I am older. My favourite memory that I have on set with my parents is probably in the Balkans when my mom was filming the movie, On The Milky Road, and I got to stay with all the farm animals that were there and see the beautiful landscape as well.

What subjects were you interested in at school and do you intend to continue to study or pursue other interests?

For now, I am not planning on studying anything – I just graduated high school. Right now, I am dedicating a year to modelling as well as a drama workshop I am in. But I would not be against going back to studying later.

Photographer: Bojana Tatarska

With acting so much part of your parents’ lives, is this something you wish to pursue?

I would not mind trying acting. I think I would actually quite enjoy it but I know it is a difficult profession that takes a lot of time to perfect and requires a lot of personal investment. I really appreciate the fact that my parents have never pushed me to act. They’ve always told me that I could be whatever I want when I grow up, which led me to be very open in diverse domains.

Photographer: Bojana Tatarska

Do you remember your first modelling shoot?

Yes, I remember my first shoot. It was a very unique experience for a 14-years-old. I discovered a new part of myself, which is what I enjoyed the most and it led me to understand myself more.

What was it like working with your mother on a modelling shoot?

I’ve actually only worked on one shoot with my mother, which was for Vogue Italia. It was an intimate and fun moment with her that in a way brought us even closer.

Photographer: Bojana Tatarska

Have you always been confident or is this something you have had to learn to become?

I’ve always had confidence thanks to the large amount of support from my surroundings, but I would say it’s only been a few years since I really started understanding what the true meaning of confidence is. It helps a lot when it comes to figuring out what I want in life and being assertive.

Working in the fashion industry, what has been the biggest highlight for you?

I have so many. But I would say being on the runway for the first time was something that truly made me happy and showed me a new aspect of the fashion industry.

Photographer: Bojana Tatarska

What are your three favourite items in your wardrobe?

I am one of those people that dresses very simply but has a hard time going out of the house if I do not feel comfortable in what I’m wearing. My outfit needs to represent my mood of the day, whether it is in the fit of the clothes or the colours. I would say that my three go-to items in my closet are my COS pants, any loose tank top and my black Livin Cool cap.

Beyond the cameras, set and runway shows, how do you like to spend your spare time?

I love to spend time with my friends and my boyfriend, cook, paint, play an instrument, go for walks, or sometimes just enjoy some alone time where I can plan my schedule and rest.

Photographer: Bojana Tatarska

What would you like to achieve in the next year?

Next year, I wish to be able to have time to learn a new language and go on a trip with my dad somewhere beautiful.

IN collaboration with creative production agency Balance Crew and artist Jason Lee, emerging New York-based streetwear brand ERR;OR put on a multimedia showcase during the recent SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, USA.

Debuting ERR;OR’s SS19 collection and featuring a riotous musical program from top Korean and Japanese performance artists, the event was a thunderous collision of fashion, art, and sound.

An image from ERR;OR’s SXSW event

An image from ERR;OR’s SXSW event

ERR;OR founder and designer PUL Sheen introduced his first collection last year with a video campaign starring Shaun Ross, and has quickly grown his unisex brand into one of the most recognizable throughout downtown New York City’s youth-strung streets, arts venues, and other creative centres.

Keeping its momentum up, ERR;OR is partnering on an upcoming graphics-forward collection with corporate and cultural influencer Gerard Adams. We wait in anticipation as, behind the scenes, the collection is being posted to the brand’s website, currently on hiatus and re-launching April 4.

An image from ERR;OR’s SXSW event

Sheen, a migrant to the USA, worked with Lee for the SXSW presentation to create an elephantine statue that was destroyed, live, with onlookers voyeuristically invited to participate in the aggression. In the creation and decomposition of the piece lived the symbolic defacement of the current American administration’s policies on immigration, as well as the beneficially combustive courage of so many young people they affect – and who are taking stands against them.

An image from ERR;OR’s SXSW event

An image from ERR;OR’s SXSW event

This spirit of resistance is true to the ethos and the construction of PUL Sheen’s designs. Through ERR;OR, the young designer has developed a sartorial platform for standing assertively against design normalcy: each piece in his line accommodates androgyny, spawning intense self-expression through unorthodox cuts and material pairings.

With a complementary campaign shot by New York-based ND Kim and John Jun Hwang of Balance Crew (whose other member, along with PUL Sheen, Kim, and Hwang, is Sherman Lee), ERR;OR’s entrée out of NYC and onto the larger cultural and geographic map marks an emigration from the brand’s temporal and spatial legacy, and clears the path toward a looming, broader-spanning imprint on the streetwear market.

Who are your heroes in life?
My hero is my mother; she is a wise woman who always knows how to solve a situation for the better.

Zhenya Migovych NMAZhenya Migovych. Photographer: Liam Bundy

What is your present state of mind?
Because now it is spring everything starts to blossom and sing, I have a creative mood and I’m preparing to comprehend new peaks, continue to develop in my direction and improve

Zhenya Migovych. Photographer: Liam Bundy

What is your idea of happiness?
Happiness is a sub-constituent of happiness. Sometimes it’s enough to open the window in the morning to see the sun. Happiness for me when I hear some good news; when I’m busy with my favourite thing; when I work and learn something and the main thing is not to forget a piece of cake. It makes me happy.

Zhenya Migovych NMAZhenya Migovych. Photographer: Liam Bundy

How would you like to be perceived by others?
I absolutely do not care how others perceive me. I do not try to be any better than I am really and not look worse than I am. Most importantly, I like to feel comfortable in myself.

Zhenya Migovych NMAZhenya Migovych. Photographer: Liam Bundy

If you were not a model, what would you be?
I wanted to go to art college, I even passed the exams. I also graduated from art school. In my spare time, away from work, I draw graphics, but at home I paint with oils. If I did not work all the time as a model, I would be an artist and interior designer. I hope to continue studying and move in this direction, someday. I have always liked sports. I studied karate for six years and I had a green belt, I think I could continue in this way. I also like running and I could do it professionally.

Zhenya Migovych NMAZhenya Migovych. Photographer: Liam Bundy

What advice do you have for other models?
I will tell you my advice for myself: first, believe in yourself; in your strength of mind; secondly, never give up; thirdly, is be universal in work and have a positive mood.

Zhenya Migovych NMAZhenya Migovych. Photographer: Liam Bundy

What is your favourite song or songs to walk on the catwalk to?
I am a music lover, but for shows, I prefer music with a clear rhythm, beating the beat. I also like to listen to similar music when I’m training.

How did you become a model?
I just wanted to try it, because I knew I would regret it if I did not. So I found an agency that was near where I lived, Willow model management, and that is where I start.

Who are your heroes in life?
My strong, lovely and beautiful mom.

Yerim Ko. Photographer: Benny Lee

Jet Groenendijk. Photographer: Liam Bundy

How did you become a model?
I was scouted on my 14th birthday while I was shopping with two friends in Amsterdam after our test week. I first thought it was a set-up from my parents for my birthday.

Who are your heroes in life?
My mum. She has always been there for me and she is the most loving and caring person I know.
My heroes in modelling are Anna Ewers and Doutzen Kroes. To have a career like theirs is my goal, especially because they really worked for it and it took some time for them to get there.

Jet Groenendijk. Photographer: Liam Bundy

What is your present state of mind?
I’m trying not to stress too much and just see how everything goes. If there is something I can do to improve my chances, then I’ll work hard for it, but if there’s something that I can’t control, then I try to let go and just go with it and enjoy the experiences.

What is your idea of happiness?
My idea of happiness is being with your loved ones, like your family and just enjoying the small things in life, like a beautiful calming sunset on the beach, or a good coffee in a cool cafe or just listening to my favourite music.

Jet Groenendijk. Photographer: Liam Bundy

How would you like to be perceived by others?
As someone who is free, strong, motivated and does not depend on opinions of other people. I want people to see that I can rely on myself and that they see how strong I am.

Jet Groenendijk. Photographer: Liam Bundy

If you were not a model, what would you be?
I would be in my first year of university, probably philosophy or international relations

Jet Groenendijk. Photographer: Liam Bundy

What is your favourite song or songs to walk on the catwalk to?
I love a songs like Freedom by George Michael, but also more modern songs by artists such as Dua Lipa are also really good to walk on.

How did you become a model?
They found me on social media, much like everyone else, although I have been scouted on the streets.

Who are your heroes in life?
My idol is my brother. He is 22 years old, graduated and has a successful business. I find him a very persistent, ambitious and creative person. His motivating personality is a living example of how to fight for your dreams.

New Model Army Zorka ScherzerZorka Scherzer. Photographer: Liam Bundy

What is your present state of mind?
I feel good in my skin, I’m happy, and I do what I like. I have met many new and interesting people in the last couple of years in this fascinating profession.

What is your idea of happiness?
The momentary state that you need to do everyday. For example, the feeling when you want something, you do a lot for it and at the end you reach your goal, it can really make you happy.

New Model Army Zorka ScherzerZorka Scherzer. Photographer: Liam Bundy

How would you like to be perceived by others?
I want people to see that I’m a kind, regular young person who is living with her options.

If you were not a model, what would you be?
There’s a lot I d like to do. I love gastronomy and I love to travel. I am interested in the culture of coffee, I have good language skills, I can easily and quickly learn languages, and combine these.

Modelling is not easy. It requires a lot of self-sufficiency and endurance, travelling and meeting people, but only for a short time, always have an alternative that will make them happy later.

What is your favourite song or songs to walk on the catwalk to?
It’s always changing, but I like anything dynamic (atm I don’t have favourite).

How did you become a model? And why?
I was scouted at the Birmingham clothes show and I thought I should make the most of the opportunity. At the time my paper round was my only real commitment so I thought I should go for it.

Have you always wanted to be a model?
No, I never thought about it, it’s been interesting learning about the industry; especially how fashion brands produce the clothing, from the pattern cutters, machinists, factories, it so interesting and the people are very talented.

Who are your heroes in life?
Jessica Ennis Hill has always been my idol because she is such an amazing sportswoman. Being world class at 7 events is so incredible.

What is your present state of mind?
I feel grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given this year, being shot for Edward’s Inaugural issue of British Vogue and being part of such a historic issue of Vogue is something I’ll always treasure!

What is your idea of happiness?
Going for a jog and then lying in bed with a pomegranate and Youtube.

How would you like to be perceived by others?
I’d like to think friendly, outgoing and chatty.

If you were not a model, what would you be?
Definitely in emergency services, probably the Metropolitan police in the firearms or riot department. Or maybe a paramedic so I can work with the old people and listen to their life stories.

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given? And who gave it to you?
One of my bookers said I shouldn’t compare myself to others because your journey is different to theirs. In the age of social media, it’s easier than ever to compare yourself to other people and beat yourself up.

What do you miss most when you’re traveling?
My dog, Skittles. I have no one to keep my feet warm at night.

What is your favourite song or songs to walk to?
Anything from the 1970s and ‘80s.

What would you say is the biggest myth or misperception about being a model?
That we have to be really healthy, yesterday I had a tub of M&S Millionaire shortbread bites for lunch.

What is your opinion on the fashion and modeling industries?
It’s very different to what I imagined, it’s very competitive, involves a lot of rejection. However, I’m impressed with the catering on shoots.

How did you become a model and why?
I became a model at 16 after being scouted at Boardmasters Festival in Newquay. I was scouted by several agencies and I chose to go with Premier.

Have you always wanted to be a model?
I was quite oblivious to the fashion industry but it’s been a fun journey so far and I really enjoy being a model.

Who are your heroes in life and in modelling?
I’ve never had heroes as such. Although, that doesn’t mean that I don’t seek inspiration from others. There are a few people I look up to and I keep tabs on their style and what they do but it’s a personal thing.

What is your present state of mind?
Relaxed, composed and focused on my studies and keeping in shape and healthy.

What is your idea of happiness?
It definitely comes from your way of thinking and keeping a positive outlook on everything.

How would you like to be perceived by others?
I want others to perceive me as I perceive myself.

If you were not a model, what would you be?
Most likely, a fully qualified carpenter. Rather different to modelling, no?

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given and who gave it to you?
A friend once said “just keep doing you”. I really liked that and I took it to heart. It’s good to be authentic.

What do you miss most when you’re travelling?
Actually, when I travel I really enjoy meeting new and interesting people and being able to be in fun and amazing places. I do miss my friends and family but I’m never away for that long.

What is your favourite song or songs to walk to?
I’m a huge fan of relaxed/chilled music but I usually just click shuffle and go.

What would you say is the biggest myth or misperception about being a model?
A lot of people say it’s an easy job but that is the biggest myth. It’s hard work (not that I’m complaining!) and what I love about it the most is that you get what you put into it.

What is your opinion of the fashion and modelling industries?
I think the industries are incredible and give people amazing opportunities that they wouldn’t necessarily be able to get.

How did you become a model? And why?
I was scouted by one of the Premier Scouts on a beach in Dorset when I was 15. I thought they were having a laugh, but it turns out they weren’t and so here I am.

Have you always wanted to be a model?
No, it surprised me but I must say, you get used to having your picture taken fairly quickly.

Who are your heroes in life and in modelling?
Naomi Klein because she’s always right. I also love Ferris Bueller as he’s always lucky. It helps that his clothes are just so great.

What is your present state of mind?
Sleepy!

What is your idea of happiness?
Happiness is to be worry and carefree yet still having something to look forward to.

How would you like to be perceived by others?
It’s really important to me to be nice as treat others as I want to be treated.

If you were not a model, what would you be?
Honestly, I don’t have an absolute clue.

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given? And who gave it to you?
My dad told me to just minus two off the second number and then you can tell the time on a 24-hour clock.

What do you miss most when you’re travelling?
Proper vegetarian food. Some places just don’t understand what vegetarianism is!

What is your favourite song or songs to walk to?
Walnuss by Gurr.

What would you say is the biggest myth or misperception about being a model?
The people you meet are usually very friendly. I think that would surprise people as fashion is seen as quite a harsh industry. It’s honestly much less competitive than you might expect.

What is your opinion on the fashion and modelling industries?
Everyone is trying their best and frankly, you can’t ask for more than that.
